Bay Path College

Longmeadow, MA

Presidents Message

Being a woman is special, and being a woman at Bay Path this year is special indeed.
For the first time in the history of the college, we will have both associate and
baccalaureate degree graduates. You will all find greater opportunities for women
today because the barriers that kept women from many careers have been removed,
and the myths about women's capabilities have been lifted. You will find more options
open to you in formulating your personal and social lives, and will be better prepared,
having had the benefits of higher education.

Our first baccalaureate degree graduates will enter the work force as achievers
with two degrees, prepared to assume responsibilities commensurate with their level
of higher education. Some may continue on to graduate studies, now or in the future. I
wish you all great success in this milestone year and a future filled with satisfaction.

For those associate degree graduates who will enter the work force following
commencement, you will be assuming new responsibilities and more freedom to
control your own destiny. I trust you will make your important choices with w isdom
and dignity. My personal wishes for you are a rewarding career and satisfving personal
life.

Those of you beginning careers will be leaving a part of yourselves to Bay Path's
heritage, and I hope you will take with you the best it offered. Your college will
remain interested in you throughout your lives, and we will welcome \ our letters and
visits.

For those of you who will continue at Bay Path to earn a baccalaureate degree,
rewarding challenges are in your immediate future as you prepare for a career \\ 1th
further formal education. We at Bay Path look forward to working with you for two
more years; it is aprivilege to be part of your academic and personal achie\ einent. My
wish for you is continued academic and personal success.

For all of you — be proud to be women and strive to maintain high standards in
your personal and professional lives. Although the primarx objecti\ e of the majorit)
of college graduates today is to secure a job with In till com pen sat ion, you will find that
job satisfaction and the quality of life cannot be measured in economic terms. As
women, you have responsibility for affairs ol the heart as well as of the mind. To
establish happy homes, bear and raise children (il that is your choice), and nnselfishl)
minister to the needs of those less fortunate - these are traditional women s roles and
your birthright. Being a woman is a chance element of nature; being a loving woman is
your obligation if you are to fully actualize your life.

Dr. Jeanette T. Wrighl

Dedication

The 1992 edition of the Portico is historic, for it is the first edition to include the
pictures and activities of baccalaureate degree candidates. Since the College's
inception, students had been a part of the academic scene for two years. With the
introduction of four-year programs in the fall of 1990, that scenario changed. The
1991-92 Portico staff, made up of students from all four classes, has been made
aware of the tremendous contributions made by the Board of Trustees, the division
chairpersons, the faculty and staff members, and the administration in realizing the
dream of Bay Path to offer the 2 + 2 degree option.

In 1958, the College had 250 students, and all of them were enrolled in either
the executive secretarial or medical secretarial program. Today, the College has
over 550 students, 14 associate degree programs, and three baccalaureate degree
programs. Since 1965, Bay Path has held the highest rating given to schools and
colleges by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. As students, we
appreciate the beauty of the campus, the cleanliness of the residence halls and
classroom buildings, the attractive decor in the dining room, and the friendliness of
the Bay Path family. Although sometimes we take all of these things for granted, we
realize that there are many caring people behind all of the opportunities and
privileges that we enjoy as Bay Path students.

The Random House Dictionary of the English Language defines the word "leader"
as "a guiding or directing hand." Our Bay Path leader came here for what she
thought was going to be a short time, as her husband was stationed at Westover Air
Force Base in Chicopee, Massachusetts, with the United States Air Force. One of
her first assignments was to teach psychology. The next year, she became chairman
of the Department of Behavioral Sciences, and since then, she has moved through
the ranks and served in a number of administrative positions prior to becoming
president in 1979.

Along the way, she earned a master of arts degree from The George Washington
University and a doctor of education degree from Boston University. She is a
member of Pi Lambda Theta, the national honorary education fraternity, and in
1986, she was chosen to be a Fulbright Scholar and studied in China. Also in 1 986
she was cited by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education as one
of America's most effective college presidents. Her invoh ement in professional and
civic organizations has made the name of Bay Path College widel) known and
respected.

We have heard our leader speak at open house meetings and at mam college
events including commencement ceremonies. We know her to be a no-nonsense
person as far as Bay Path is concerned. Her life is Bay Path. We ha> e also learned ol
her humorous side through various visits to her home for special events.

The Portico staff feels it appropriate to dedicate the firsl associate and bacca
laureate degree edition of the I'm lien to our president. Dr. Jeanette T. Wrrjil
because she has been the driving force and the most instrumental person in the
College's attaining the 2 + 2 program.

College History

Bay Path College traces its beginnings to a co-educational business school
founded in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1897. Originally named Bay Path
Institute, it offered programs in secretarial science, accounting, and business
teacher-training. The school occupied four different locations in Springfield. The
name "Bay Path" refers to the earliest trail in the region used by the original
settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the seventeenth century.

In 1945 Bay Path Institute became Bay Path Secretarial School and was relocated
to the Wallace Estate in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. The beautiful wooded,
twenty-two acres provided a campus for the school, where enrollment was
restricted to young women. The College was chartered in 1949 by the Common-
wealth of Massachusetts as Bay Path Junior College and authorized to grant the
degree of associate in science. Authorization toward the associate in arts degree to
students in the liberal arts program was granted by the Massachusetts Board of
Collegiate authority in 1963.

In November 1988 the Massachusetts Board of Regents authorized the new
name, Bay Path College: A Two-Year College for Women. In 1991 The Regents
authorized Bay Path to award the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in
Business, Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies, and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.
Henceforth, Bay Path College became a "Two-plus-Two" institution with both
associate and baccalaureate degree-granting authority.

Spotlight On . . .

Reach Up!

How far do you want to reach?

How high do you want to climb?

It's all up to you, you know;

But everything takes time.

Start from the bottom, go easy; it

may take a while.

Maybe tough going at times.

But try to put on a smile.

After the rain, isn't there always

the sun?

Whatever you do in life have faith

to go on.

Then you know you've won.

Attitude, patience, willing to work

hard, that's the key.

You've made it this far, you'll

make it: you'll see!

UNION-NEWS, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 1991

Upperclassmen
enter Bay Path

By CRYSTAL HAMER

LONGMEADOW — Labor Day
weekend 1991 at Bay Path College
will be remembered for years to
come.

After receiving the authority to
award bachelors' degrees from
the state Board of Regents of
Higher Education in Septem-
ber 1990, approximately 28
fourth-year students arrived at
the college Saturday to become
Bay Path's first senior students.

There will also be more than 40
third-year students this year.

It's the first time the college
has had freshman, sophomore, ju-
nior and senior classes, Bay Path
officials said.

The women's college offers a
two-plus-two degree program
where students can earn an associ-
ates' degrees in two years and
then re-enroll for another two
years to obtain bachelors' degree.

A student can earn an associ-
ate's degree in one of 14 areas and
a bachelor's degree in one of three
majors. The associates' programs
are designed to "naturally lead"
into one of the baccalaureate
degrees, officials said.

The upperclassmen, including
members of the Class of 1992 who
will receive the college's first
bachelors' degrees, registered Sa-
turday afternoon.

They said they were glad to be
back.

"After I left, I appreciated the
quality of life here more than I re-
alized," Lauren Lachut said.

After she earned her associate
of science in business adminis-
tration from Bay Path in
May 1989, Lachut attended anoth-
er college where she was "miser-
able," she said.

PATHBREAKERS — Four students in the first senior class ever at
Bay Path College in Longmeadow visit the bookstore. In foreground,
Lauren Lachut, left, of Palmer, shows a school shirt to Jacqueline
James of New Haven, Conn. In the background, Pamela Johnson,
left, of Warwick, and Erin Hanley of Simsbury, Conn., examine car-
ds.

"So, I was happy to find out that
the school was going for four
years. I would have stayed if it
was a four-year school," she said.

Lachut, who is from Bondsville,
is pursuing a bachelor of science
in business.

Erin Hanley, who received her
1990 associate degree in arts and
sciences, agreed.

"I was really excited, I was glad
that it happened," the Simsbury,
Conn., native said.

Hanley, who plans to obtain a
bachelor's degree in psychology,
feels that what Bay Path College
has to offer will help her tremen-
dously.

"Today, it is very important to
become as educated as possible. It
will keep you ahead. Here, they
don't just teach academics, but
how to survive out in the world

"There are a lot of opportunities
to be creative and to be a leader,"
she said.

Hanley said she chose to return
to the college because of its of its
small size and helpful faculty
members.

"You get the attention you need
— you are not just a number," she
said.

Pamela Johnson of Warwick,

who is pursuing a bachelor of sci-
ence in business, agreed.

"I came from a small high
school and didn't want to go to a
big college. Here, there is a friend-
ly atmosphere," she said

Jacqueline James, who obtained
her 1990 associate degree in arts
and sciences, plans to take what
she learns from Ray Path and
apply it to help people in her
hometown of New Haven. Conn

"I was the first member on both
sides of my family to attend col-
lege," she said.

James, who is pursuing a bach-
elor's degree in psychology, calls
her collegiate career her own.
"personal goal."

"I knew 1 had to further m\ edu-
cation. As a woman, it is hard to
get a jot), bill it is even harder for
a black woman." she said

Joanne Guernsey, director of
public information at the college,
said. "These kids develop a sense
of maturity that I can see over
two years, and now as juniors and
seniors. I continue to ee them
growing.

•This makes what we 'i" here
worthwhile."

College Memories

So much has happened,

Four years have passed,

It may not have been perfect,

But the memories will last.

There was winning and losing.
There was laughter as well as tears.

There was a feeling of closeness
As together we fought off our fears.

New friends were discovered;

Old friends grew.

Some disagreements came about.

Yet the best times stayed true.

We all started out young,

Unknowing and carefree,

And together we grew,

Heading for what is to be.

— Jackie Cheverella

BAY PATH MAY
BUY ESTATE IN
LONGMEADOW

School Said to Seek Home

Of Late John Robinson

For Dormitory

The home' of the late John Robinson
at 514 Longmeadow St., Longmeadow,
may be purchased by Bay Path
Secretarial School as a dormitory, it
was learned yesterday. The property
is now owned by Mrs. Douglas V.
Wallace, a daughter of the late Mr.
Robinson. He deeded the property to
Mrs. Wallace several years before his
death. It adjoins the property of Bay
Path Secretarial school which several
years ago moved from this city to the
former Douglas Wallace estate in
Longmeadow.

Before the property can be used as
a dormitory a permission for a change
in zoning must be granted by the
Board of Appeals. No petition for the
change has been filed as yet, it was
said yesterday by Robert N. Ingersoll,
of the board. There is a provision in
the law under which the board may
grant a change in zoning to permit
use of property by a private school.

The place is among the most im-
posing in Longmeadow and it would
give the school commdious dormitory
accomodation. It has been understood
that the school has been handicapped
in enrolling as many students as
wished to attend because of lack of
dormitory space.

Thomas G. Carr, president of the
school declined comment on the
negotiations other than to say that
he might have something to say
next week.

Bay Path Given
Junior College Rating

Bay Path Secretarial School
has been given the rating of a
Junior College by the Board of
Collegiate Authority. The Long-
meadow school, which has an en-
rollment of 160 students, nine of
whom are from the greater Hol-
yoke area, now has the right to
grant the degree of associate in
science, one of the two degrees the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts
authorises junior colleges to issue.

Thomas G. Carrm, president of
the new • Junior College, was
notified of the rating by Comm-
issioner of Education John J.
Desmond, Jr., who is chairman of
the authority.

Bay Path has two courses of
study, an executive secretarial
course and a medical secretarial
course.

Bay Path Will Construct
New Classroom Building

Construction of a new classroom
building at Bay Path Junior Col-
lege will begin this winter, it was
announced today by President
Thomas G. Carr Monday.
Will Open in 1%;{

The building, which is scheduled
for completion in time for the
opening of college in September,
1963, will contain 10 general class-
rooms, a language laboratory, a
biology laboratory, a chemistry
laboratory and an auditorium seat-
ing 425 persons.

Office space for faculty mem-
bers and a student lounge have
also been included in the plans.
Architects ar e McClintook &
Craig.

The structure will measure 120
feet by 03 feet and will be of
brick construction in keeping with
the Georgian Colonial architecture
of other college buildings. It will
l be located southwest of Empsall
Hall facing Deepwood Hall, the
main administration building.

"This classroon building repre-
sents a major addition to the edu-
cational facilities at Bay Path,"
stated President Carr.

"It is the result of many years
of planning," he added, "and will
give greater flexibility schedul-
ing classes to meet the demands
of our new liberal arts division,

which opened in September, for
increased area for science classes
and more ample arrangements for
small classes and seminars. This
new addition to the campus is part
of a long range plan adopted sev-
eral years ago by Bay Path Junior
College with a view to improving
the educational opportunities of a
growing college."

In the fall of 1960, two new
buildings were completed on the
Bay Path campus: a dormitory,
jBoilum Hall, housing 116 students;

and West Halt, containing the col-
lege dining hall and student
lounge. Last year, the college pur-
chased the Longmeadow Christian
Science Church and, after exten-
sive remodeling, it opened in the
fall as Hatch Memorial Library.
Also purchased at the same time
by Bay Path was a Longmeadow
St. residence adjoining college
property which was also renovated
and opened last fall as Perkins
Hall, a small dormitory -lor resi-
dent students.

Action will be required by the
Zoning Board of Appeals in I^ong-
meadow to act on a petition of
the college for approval of thr
new building on the Bay Path
Campus. A hearing has been set
by the board on the college appli-
cation for Monday, the loth, at
8 in Town Hall.

Monday selected Dr. Wright, currently
Bay Path's dean and vice president for

Of Bay Path Junior College

(Continued from Page 1)

In accepting the appointment, Dr.
Wright said: "I am delighted with the
honor and the privilege of serving as
Bay Path's fourth president. The col-
lege is in a strong position to meet the
widely publicized challenges that inde-
pendent colleges will face in the 1980s.
Having been associated with Bay Path
for so many years. 1 hope to provide
continuity to Dr. Elliott's successful

Bay Path Will Dedicate Dorm

LONGMEADOW - Bay Path
Junior College will dedicate its new
Brookside Hall dormitory and the
M. Constance Breck Alumnae Suite
Sunday at 3 p.m.

The opening of the $2.4 million
Brookside Hall earlier this month
made it possible for Bay Path to
eliminate its off-campus residence
arrangement of placing students in
neighboring Longmeadow homes,
according to Dr. Jeanette T. Wright,
president of the junior college
said.

"Brookside was built because of
student demand for on-campus liv-
ing," Ms. Wright said. "For the first
time since the college was estab-
lished in Longmeadow, we will

accommodate all students who
applied for on-campus residence.
We now have ideal facilities for stu-
dents and all seven of Bay Path's
residence halls are filled this year."
The new dormitory will house 131
students.

The large entertainment area and
meeting room in the new dormitory
is named in honor of Bay Path
alumna, adviser and benefactor, M.
Constance Breck, Ms. Wright said.

Participating in the cermonies
will be: S. Prestley Blake, trustee
and former board chairman; The
Rev. Ward R. Smith, pastor of St.
Andrew's Episcopal Church and a
chaplain at the college; Tanya Kas-
chuluk, a member of the senior
class; and Ms. Wright.

College changes its oanie

By PHYLLIS ANDREONI

LONGMEADOW - Ray Bath
Junior College has officially
changed its name to Bay Path Col-
lege, President Jeanette T. Wright
announced yesterday.

She said that an amendment to
the college's articles of organizion
making the change has been ap-
proved by the Massachusetts
Board of Regents of Higher Edu-
cation.

One major reason for the
change, she said, is that "there ap-
pears to be a misconception on the
part of the public and prospective
students that junior colleges and
community colleges are the same,
where in fact they are very differ-
ent."

She noted that community col-
leges are public-supported, usually
large, and almost always serve
only commuting students.

"Junior colleges are indepen-
dent, usually small, privately sup-
ported, have selective admissions
policies, and most often are pri-
marilyjresidential," she said. "Bay
Path wants to remain distinctive
from community colleges and not
be confused with them."

A second major reason for the
change, she said, is that "junior" is
often misconstrued as "less then"
or unequal to the first two years of
a baccalaureate degree program.

"In fact, Bay Path is equivalent
in all ways: the curriculum, the
level of instruction, the difficulty
of course content, and so forth,"
she said. "This is supported by the
fact that Bay Path graduates
transfer to four-year colleges and

universities or. a regular basis
with full third-year status."

Wright said there are only a few
private two-year colleges in New
England that continue to use the
word "junior" in their title.

"Bay Path will remain a two-
year college for women, as it has
been for almost 40 years." she
said. "But our trustees believed it
was time to eliminate the 'junior'
from our formal name. Instead,
we will, as Massachusetts law re-
quires, include the phrase 'a two-
year college for women' on our of-
ficial documents and publica-
tions."

This is the fourth time a name
change has occurred since the
founding of the school in 1897, as
Bay Path Institute, in Springfield.

Bay Path graduates find
work despite economic ills

LONGMEADOW ■ Despite a
depressed business climate and a
growing unemployment rate.
about 95 percent of the Bay Path

College class of 1990 graduates
who chose not to continue their
education have found jobs in
fields of their choice.

The 1990 Placement Report
issued recently by the college's
Career Services Center said that
127 out of 134 women were work-
ing, mostly in positions directly
related to their program of study
at Bay Path.

An additional 75 women are
continuing their education, 22 at
Bay Path where they are enrolled
as third-year students in new
upper-division courses leading to
proposed baccalaureate degrees.

This is the eighth consecutive
year that graduates have enjoyed
such an exceptional success rate,
officials said.

A major reason, according to
Judith Cohen, director of career
services, is the strong support sys-
tem provided by the college's
Career Services Center.

Each year, Bay Path arranges
on-campus interviews for grad-
uating students, and in 1990,
approximately 50 businesses rang-
ing from major corporations,
banks, retail stores and insurance
companies to airlines, law firms,
hospitals and government
agencies visited the college to re-
cruit, officials said.

Bay Path College

By PAUL BOUCHARD

Courant Correspondent

LONGMEADOW, Mass. — A
small airplane flew over the crowd
of 200 people Friday trailing a ban-
ner that read, "Congratulations Bay
Path College."

Below, students and faculty at
Bay Path College applauded when
Jeanette T. Wright, the school's pres-
ident, told them that the women's
college will offer three bachelor's
degrees.

The college will offer a bachelor
of arts degree in psychology and
bachelor of science degrees in busi-
ness and legal studies.

Bay Path became a four-year col-
lege Thursday, when the Massachu-
setts Board of Regents of Higher
Education granted it authority to
award the degrees, Wright said.

"For students who want to stay
here," Wright said, "there is no need
to change colleges and say goodbye
to friends and faculty members."

The college, which enrolls 550 stu-
dents a year, has offered an asso-
ciate's degree since 1949. Wright
said the school would continue to
offer the associate's degree in 14
majors.

to offer bachelor's degrees

After receiving an associate's de-
gree, students go to work, apply to
another college or continue bacca-
laureate studies at Bay Path for an-
other two years.

"I'm glad I'll be able to continue
here," said Liz Peroulakis, a sopho-
more. "I really enjoy the small class
sizes, and the teachers are easy to
talk to."

Wright applied 15 months ago to
offer four-year degrees. In Septem-
ber, the college was granted author-
ity to offer upper-level classes and
tentatively granted authority to of-
fer baccalaureate degrees.

Wright said 37 students are en-
rolled as juniors. "They entered on
faith," she said. College spokeswom-
an Joanne Guernsey said 32 of those
are expected to graduate in Mav
1992.

Jennifer Brooks, a junior, said she
stayed at Bay Path for her junior

year because she enjoys the individ-
ual attention paid to students at the
small college.

"I was nervous, but I knew the
school would get permission,"
Brooks said, "I had faith."

Wright said 80 percent of students
in recent years went on to four-year
colleges.

Christine Murray, a sophomore,
said she is glad the school offers
baccalaureate degrees, but said the
staff should be increased also.

"The psychology program is not
big or broad enough," Murray said.
"It is a great school but it needs to
expand staff and services."

UNION-NEWS, SATURDAY, MAY 4, 1991 —

sight,

Shines Alma Mater, our beacon light.

Hail, Alma Mater, our beacon, hail!

Bay Path approved
for bachelor's degrees

LONGMEADOW — The Massa-
chusetts Board of Regents of
Higher Education has granted
Bay Path College the authority to
award bachelor's degrees in three
majors.

The women's college, formerly
a two-year college offering only
associate degrees, may now con-
fer a bachelor of arts in psycholo-
gy and bachelor of science de-
grees in business and legal
studies.

"I haven't hit the ground yet
today," said Bay Path President
Jeanette Wright, who made the
announcement to students, faculty
and parents. "There are some
very special things about Bay
Path that our students and paren-
ts have noticed and they have
asked us why we didn't have two

more years. It is a safe campus
. . . with a fine academic pro-
gram."

The college will offer a two-
plus-two degree sequence in which
students will earn an associate
degree in one of 14 areas after
completing two years of study.
They can then stay for two more
years to earn a bachelor's degree
in one of three majors.

The regents granted the college
permission to offer upper-level
courses last September, and 32
members of the associate degree
class of 1990 returned to campus
as juniors. Five more graduates
re-entered Bay Path in January to
continue their education. This
year 40 sophomores have enrolled
for the fall.

Bay Path wins
new degree OK

It began as a business school for young
women, then became a junior college for
women, offering associate degrees.

Now Bay Path College (the "junior" was
dropped last year) officially has permission
from the Board of Regents of Higher Education
to award bachelor's degrees in three majors — a
B.A. in psychology and bachelor of science in
business and legal studies.

After the regents granted permission for the
upper-level courses last September, 32 members
of the associate degree class of 1990 returned to
campus as juniors, and five more enrolled in
January.

So the 1992 graduation will see the conferring
of Bay Path's first bachelor's degrees. The num-
ber should grow r in future years as the two-plus-
two program (the students first get associate de-
grees, then re-enroll for the bachelor's degree
program) expands. Forty of this year's grad-
uates have enrolled for the fall.

Bay Path and its president, Jeanette Wright,
can be proud of the progress the Longmeadow
institution has made. It has come a long way.

Portico Staff

Front: Stacey Valk, Pamela Johnson, Lisa Jagun. Back: Barbara Searleman, Julie
Lincoln. Shelly Monica. Holli Young, Rachelle Moreland, Geraldine Shea.

A yearbook is a collection of memories,
especially for those students who are
graduating. This yearbook will include
the first senior class to graduate from Bay
Path. Though all of the special moments
that happened during the year cannot be
captured in this book, many events that
occurred will be pictured.

I would like to thank everyone on the
yearbook staff, especially Stacey Valk,
ShelK Monica, and Julie Lincoln for all of
their valuable time and effort spent on
the production of the 1992 Portico.

Special thanks to Dean Conrad, Mrs.
Beaulieu, Miss Schirmer, and Mrs.
Guernsey for their assistance in the prep-
aration of this project.

Also, many thanks to George Petro, our
representative from the Delmar Printing
Company, who has advised the staff
throughout the year on our many dead-
lines, proofs and problems.

Good luck and best wishes to the Class
of 1992!

Pamela Johnson

To the Administrators, Faculty, Staff, and
especially my friends at Bay Path:

A Special Friend

Someone who is always here
To shed some light and chase the fear.
When I'm upset and feeling down,
You make me smile instead of frown.

You listen to the words that I speak
And give the guidance that I seek.
You always know the things to say
To bring some light into my day.

You always seem to understand
And are ready to lend a caring hand.
Throughout the years, you've always

been
To me ... a special friend.
